Journey is a stand-out album – no question. The issues it covers and the way the songs and messages are delivered is what makes it outstanding. On top of the emotional and heart-felt delivery of all the songs by Archie Roach, his songwriting captures the essence of some very emotional and distressing stories about stolen aboriginal children and deaths in custody – the details of which were revealed when travelling around Australia and filming the documentary ‘Liyarn Ngarn’ (see movie review opposite). There is loss and longing in these songs as well as a sacred depth. However Archie Roach’s great artistic achievement is his ability to turn ‘darkness into light’, despair into hope and all that he does into art.
