Making the Cut
By : Mohamed Khadra
ISBN: 978 1 74166 732 5
In the opening Author’s Note of Making the Cut, Khadra talks about tutorials with students where he insisted that they presented a favourite poem in each class, to impress upon them that their role as a surgeon would be ‘intimately and inextricably involved in the study of humanity’. After each poem had been read the students drew analogies from the poem to stories of patients and how illness brings changes to the very heart of a human who is facing their mortality, their fears and their pain. This introduction sets the tone for the book. The parallel itself – surgery and poetry, I found to be quite, well ‘cutting’. In this exemplary work, Khadra gives the reader an extraordinary and rare insight into the life of a surgeon – and hospitals. A very important and compelling read.
